Monographs

Featured here are three monographs published by Chaosium for Call of Cthulhu, the role-playing game of Lovecraftian horror.  These scenarios are designed to be run in one or two sessions to create a unique horror experience for the Keeper (GM) and players.  They are formatted in a scene structure that provides expositional elements leading to a moderately open ended conclusion allowing the players to have a cinematic horror experience.  The scenarios are complete kits including characters and handouts.  The Keeper (GM) need only perform minor work such as photocopying and/or printing to get the game started, although a sound track and some creepy lighting helps!

Rise of the Dead: Part 2 – The Raid

A complete b-movie style horror scenario with highly detailed characters and handouts intended for a theatrical style presentation in one or two sessions.  This book includes many zombie pictures and narrative text!

Rise of the Dead: Part 2 - The RaidCivilization has collapsed due to the apocalyptic devastation of the Earth by a red comet. The strike brought tidal waves and fallout. Making matters more horrific the dead have begun to rise and attack the living. Even worse these zombies are being organized into armies by black-uniformed cultists. Some survivors have banded together forming an organized group of survivors at Morgan Farm, Vermont. A handpicked team of volunteers has been chosen for a special mission to gain vital intelligence. The team is expendable, but the mission is critical to the survival of family, friends, loved ones, and possibly civilization itself. There are many questions: Who are they? What do they want? Why are the dead rising? Can they be stopped?

This cinematic style scenario is designed for 4-6 players.  The characters experience a taste of the apocalyptic horror of the coming of Zaoth and the rise of the dead. Some of the scope of the Cult of Zaoth is revealed through chilling action.  Quick wits are the order of the day!

 The Vault

A complete cinematic style convention scenario of claustrophobic fear, darkness, and terror with highly detailed characters and handouts intended for theatrical style presentation in one or two sessions.

The VaultAfter years of work a group of friends and family has tracked down an ancient vault secreted on an old family property. The foolish notions of the locals, rumors of dread horror and sorcery, and the reservations of their more superstitious kin have not been a deterrent.  Despite the labor problems with the superstitious locals, the difficulties of excavation, and the years of painstaking research, the vault is ready to open. Unknown to the protagonists, crushing terror, madness, and the vile inescapable machinations of pure evil lurk in the dark vault.

This challenging scenario for 4-6 players, heavily based upon the works of H.P. Lovecraft, requires puzzle solving skills, fortitude, and wit.  Survival is not nearly enough.  The fate of the world may be in the desperate hands of a few and the hours run by with chilling speed toward a merciless conclusion where escape is not nearly enough.

Rise of the Dead: Part 1 – The Arrival

A complete b-movie style horror scenario with highly detailed characters and handouts intended for a theatrical style presentation in one or two sessions.

Rise of the Dead: Part One - The ArrivalSix days ago the hammer fell. The red comet did not strike the planet, but it was a near miss. Fragments smashed into the earth bringing tidal waves, storms, and fallout. A rage of elemental destruction devastated the planet. Millions, perhaps even billions, have died. Defying the laws of physics the main mass of the comet has entered orbit. Now a hellish new moon, a baleful red eye rises and glares balefully through an occasional rent in the near perpetual cloud cover. Communications are out, the fate of civilization is unknown and the apocalyptic hammer blow is only the beginning of the horror as the dead begin to rise!

This cinematic style scenario is designed for 4-8 players.  The devastation of the world was just a prelude to the terror of the rising dead.  The chance to help others requires quick wits and action and reveals even further horror. Survival is just the beginning!
